THE bizhub Highveld Lions is the brand name for the Southern Gauteng franchise. The headquarters are at the Liberty Life Wanderers Stadium and matches are played both there and at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, the home of North West who are the other constituent partner.
They also have the problem of having two venues which are situated a substantial distance apart and their recent record has been fairly modest with their only success being the Standard Bank Pro20 in the 2006/07 season. Neil Mckenzie is the only CSA contracted player and will be available for the Lions for the bulk of the season. Vaughn van jaarsveld is another player that will be of added value to the Lions. Their top six will now include Mckenzie, Van Jaarsveld and another Protea, Alviro Peterson, who scored six first-class centuries last season, and two of the best young talents in the country Jonathan Vandiar and Dane Vilas. Vandiar, assuredly one of the best teenagers in world cricket at the moment, made an excellent start to his Lions career last season before being cruelly struck down by a major Achillers tendon injury, while Vilas was named Domestic New-comer of the year at the CSA awards in June. Zander de Bruyn returns "home" after a spell at the Chevrolet Warriors and showed excellent form for Somerset in Division One of the England County Championship. There are other young batting talents around such as Jean Symes and recent SA U19 cap Temba Bavuma and the experience of Stephen Cook.
The bizhub Highveld Lions captain is Neil McKenzie and the coach Dave Nosworthy. Squad: Neil Mckenzie, Alviro Peterson, Stephen Cook, Jean Symes, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Zander de Bruyn, Jonathan Vandiar, Dane Vilas, Thami Tsolekile, Werner Coetsee, Aaron Phangiso, Friedel de Wet, Craig Alexander, Etienne Gerber, Andre Nel, Heinrich le Roux, Ugasen Govender. |
