CHEVROLET WARRIORS is the brand name for the Eastern Cape franchise of Cricket South Africa. Its constituent parts are the Eastern Province and Border Cricket Boards. They play their home matches at Axxess DSL St. George's in Port Elizabeth and at Buffalo Park in East London. The headquarters are currently at the Port Elizabeth venue, having originally been in East London. For a franchise whose two main centres are 300km apart and whose recruitment area is easily the largest geographically of all the franchises, the Warriors have done remarkably well to overcome the practical problems that existed at formation. They have yet to win a major trophy but have been runners up in both the MTN Domestic Championship and the Standard Bank Pro20 on numerous occasions. Mickey Arthur was their original coach before moving on to the international world of the Proteas and there is every sign that the building blocks he put in place are about to bear fruition. The Warriors will feel the loss of Zander de Bruyn, Robbie Peterson and Mario Olivier this season 2009/2010 but have recruited the services of former Proteas spinner, Nicky Boje. There are a host of youngsters coming through the ranks such as Andrew Birch, Jon-Jon Smuts, Corbyn Dolley and Siyamthanda Ntshona. They currently have no fewer than six nationally contracted players in Kallis, Prince, Boucher, Johan Botha, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Wayne Parnell and South Africa's most popular player, Makhaya Ntini. Five of the six learned their cricket in the Eastern Cape - Kallis being the exception - which says a lot for the area as a cricket nursery. The current captain is Davy Jacobs and the coach is Russell Domingo. Squad: Davy Jacobs, Michael Smith, Jon-Jon Smuts, Colin Ingram, Jacques Kallis, Ashwell Prince, Arno Jacobs, Darryl Brown, Mark Boucher, Johan Botha, Wayen Parnell, Craig Thyssen, Riaan Jeggels, Andrew Birch, Nicky Boje, Corbyn Dolley, Makhaya Ntini, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Juan Theron, Sinethemba Mjekula, Lyall Meyer, Garnett Kruger, Siyamthanda Ntshona |
