Additional Coaching Initiatives
In addition to the activities and formal training of coaches as outlined in the guidelines, standards and requirements of the CSA Coaches Academy structure (courses from Orientation to Level IV), the following initiatives and programmes have been introduced to assist with the continued growth and development of coaches throughout the country and to ensure that capacity building takes place on an on-going basis.
It is important to keep in mind that the retention of players for roles in coaching, administration and as officials is absolutely essential to sustain the game and as such, forms the final phase or stage of the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model – ‘Retirement/Retention in the Sport’.
In this regard, it has been particularly pleasing to see how many current and former first-class and international cricketers we have been able to introduce to coaching, contributing to some of the fundamental aims of the Academy, namely:
• To broaden the base by coaching new coaches;
• To supply quality coaches to the system.
By way of example, and apart from the more senior, established coaches already working within the various structures and system, the following former Protea cricketers have all attended and completed either the Level III or Level IV courses in recent years:
Rudi Steyn, Kevin Commins, Omar Henry, Eric Simons, Henry Williams, Derek Crookes, Gary Kirsten, Daryll Cullinan, Paul Adams, Roger Telemachus, Shafiek Abrahams, Lance Klusener, Dave Callaghan, Linda Olivier, Suné van Zyl and Daleen Terblanche,
Add to this an even longer list of provincial/franchise players that have qualified as Level III coaches and one can see why we are optimistic about the future coaching of our young cricketers.
