Cricket Development

Womens Cricket!

In a similar way that the extension of the vote to women in England and other countries after World War 1 led to the formation of the first national organizations and the beginning of international women’s cricket, the formal advent of democracy in South Africa in 1994 resuscitated women’s cricket which had collapsed in the last years of apartheid.

From Bakers Mini Cricket to the Proteas!

If you dream of becoming the next JP Duminy, then you've come to the right place. JP's success is no fluke; it's the result of passion, hard work, and self belief. This young man knew what he wanted and showed great talent as he made his way through the Cricket South Africa pipeline on his way to becoming an international superstar at the age of 24. Other players who followed this well travelled cricket pipeline to become Proteas include Makhaya Ntini, Mark Boucher, Hashim Amla and Paul Adams.

Coaching the Coaches

Bakers Coaching Academy

The Bakers Coaches Academy was a natural extension of the mini cricket sponsorship due to the increased number of children playing cricket creating a demand for more trained coaches. This innovative academy is managed by the Manager of Coaching in conjunction with the Coaching Committee of CSA and aims to keep up with the latest technical developments taking place in other cricketing nations to help South Africa’s coaching system remain at the cutting edge.

The main objective of the Bakers Coaches Academy is to control the training, qualification and certification of cricket coaches in South Africa. Coaching certificates ranging from the introductory Mini Cricket Level to an advanced Level IV National Certificate can be obtained. The academy not only broadens the base by coaching new coaches but it also monitors the criteria of the various coaching levels in order to maintain uniformity.

One of the reasons the academy was formed was as a result of a tremendous increase in the number of young cricketers in South Africa, and with it came the need for coaches from all population groups. The sponsorship of the Academy by Bakers since 1994 is regarded as a natural extension of this extremely popular and successful soft-ball version of the game.

There are a number of reasons why people start coaching; some are parents wanting to get involved, many are school teachers and others are either current or former players who wish to put something back into the game or maintain an interest once their playing days are over.

"Cricket is a game that bases itself on fair play, on respect for your opponents and on using individual skills for the overall good of the team. These are qualities that I greatly admire and which I believe should be applicable to both cricket and to life in general."
