The MTN40 is Cricket South Africa's domestic equivalent of ODI matches although fixtures are decided on a 40 overs basis rather than the traditional 50 overs format.
There are also other significant differences aimed to make the tournament more spectator friendly, enabling fans to get to the ground after work for the start of day/night matches and to avoid a finish that is too late at night.
These include:
*the use of a rolling substitute (12th man) who is allowed to take a full part in the game as batsman and bowler in addition to his normal fielding duties.
*allowing the batting side to decide when the two five-over power plays are taken although they must be completed by the end of the 35th over. The one power play allows three fielders outside the 30-metre circle and the other allows four.
Fixtures are either played as day/night matches on Wednesdays and Fridays (4.30pm start) or as day matches on Sundays (10am start).
The six franchises play a double round of 10 matches (five at home and five away) with the top four teams qualifying for the knock-out phase in which the No. 1 side on the log plays No. 4 in the one semi-final and No. 2 plays No. 3 in the second semi-final with the winners going through to the final. In all cases the team with the higher log position has home ground advantage. There is also a reserve day allowed for all knock-out matches in the case of inclement weather conditions.
