The SuperSport Series is Cricket South Africa's premier first-class competition, consisting of a double round (home and away) of four-day fixtures. Initially the league system was followed by a five-day final, contested by the top two teams on the log with the league winners having home ground advantage.

However, this was found to be unsatisfactory as the trophy was shared in both the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons after the five-day game finished in a high-scoring draw. It was understandable that the league winners were not prepared to take any risks.

For the last two seasons the SuperSport Series has been decided on a pure league competition and has led to a much more satisfactory climax to this format of cricket.

The SuperSport Series is acknowledged as the breeding ground and nursery for Cricket South Africa's future Test team talent and it is where all the Protea internationals have first cut their teeth and made names for themselves.

In its early history the SuperSport Series was contested by 11 provinces but, with the birth of the franchise system, it is now contested by six teams making for a double round of 10 fixtures. These are normally arranged to coincide with South Africa's home programme of Castle Test series so that the national team can have the best possible preparation for the international matches.

The MTN40 is Cricket South Africa's domestic equivalent of ODI matches although fixtures are decided on a 40 overs basis rather than the traditional 50 overs format.

There are also other significant differences aimed to make the tournament more spectator friendly, enabling fans to get to the ground after work for the start of day/night matches and to avoid a finish that is too late at night.

These include:

*the use of a rolling substitute (12th man) who is allowed to take a full part in the game as batsman and bowler in addition to his normal fielding duties.

*allowing the batting side to decide when the two five-over power plays are taken although they must be completed by the end of the 35th over. The one power play allows three fielders outside the 30-metre circle and the other allows four.

Fixtures are either played as day/night matches on Wednesdays and Fridays (4.30pm start) or as day matches on Sundays (10am start).

The six franchises play a double round of 10 matches (five at home and five away) with the top four teams qualifying for the knock-out phase in which the No. 1 side on the log plays No. 4 in the one semi-final and No. 2 plays No. 3 in the second semi-final with the winners going through to the final. In all cases the team with the higher log position has home ground advantage. There is also a reserve day allowed for all knock-out matches in the case of inclement weather conditions.

Winners of the MTN Domestic Championship which was replaced by the MTN40 for the 2009/10 season since the franchise system was introduced:

·         2004/05: Diamond Eagles

·         2005/06: Diamond Eagles

·         2006/07: Nashua Cape Cobras

·         2007/08: Nashua Titans

·         2008/09: Nashua Titans

Note:The tournament was known as the Standard Bank Cup for the first two years of the franchise system before becoming the MTN Domestic Championship at the start of the 2006/07 campaign and the MTN40 for from 2009/10.

pro20celebrationTHE Standard Bank Pro20 was used to launch the franchise system at the end of the 2003/04 season and has been a domestic highlight ever since. Like its format of 20 overs per side, it has a short, sharp format of five league matches followed by a semi-final and final.

This means that in alternative years the franchises have three home matches and two away league matches followed by two home fixtures and three away the following season.

The format for the knock-outs stages is the same as for the MTN Domestic Championship. The No.

There is the additional incentive of the two finalists qualifying to be Cricket South Africa's two representatives in the Champions' League which is a joint global venture between Cricket South Africa, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, and Cricket Australia.

The Standard Bank Pro20 also provides a showcase for players who are not regular members of the Proteas' Standard Bank ODI or T20 squads to underline their talents for the various franchises who compete in the Indian Premier League at the end of the South African season.

It is an extremely lucrative venture for South Africa's domestic and international cricketers and a financial alternative to England's county championship.
