De Bruyn ton spirits Titans to victory at Cubs Week

The fourth day of Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week in Stellenbosch was once again a day where the captain of one of the franchises produced a match winning performance. Nashua Titans’ captain, Theunis de Bruyn (122) scored the only century on the fourth day as his side defeated the Chevrolet Knights by 125 runs. It was the Knights fourth successive defeat at the tournament.

The Titans batted first and managed 280/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

De Bruyn was in a destructive mood as he faced 100 deliveries and struck eight fours and six sixes, two of which landed on the roof of the distillery next to the Distell-field. He and opening batsman, Murray Coetzee shared a momentous partnership of 163 runs for the second wicket before the latter’s wickets was scattered by Johan van Dyk. The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week player of the tournament, Diego Rosier only entered his side’s bowling attack in the 40th over, but still managed to be the pick of his side’s bowlers. He grabbed three wickets while conceding 25 runs in his five overs.

The Knights could only manage 155 thanks to some good bowling by Vincent Moore (3/11) and Regardt Verster (3/24). Moore bowled seven overs of which two were maidens. The captain of the Knights, Gihahn Cloete (29) and Sine Ntshona (27) were the only players who made contributions with the bat.

The bizhub Highveld Lions ended the Sunfoil Dolphins’ undefeated record at the Week with a four-wicket victory thanks to an all round performance by Shaylen Pillay. He was the pick of his side’s bowlers picking up three wickets for a mere 22 runs, and also scored an unbeaten half-century to steer his side home.

The Dolphins were sent in to bat by the Lions and were restricted to 196 with Senuran Muthusamy (49), Mark Airey (35) and Chad Bowes (31) all contributing. Pillay and David Rhoda (32*) shared an unbeaten 77-run partnership for the seventh wicket.

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras experienced not too much trouble in beating the Chevrolet Warriors by seven wickets. The home side won the toss and elected to field which proved the right choice. The Warriors could only manage 147 runs before being bowled out. Jaycin Snyman, top scoring for them with 39 runs. Travis Muller (3/21) and Rabian Engelbrecht (3/38) caused the most damage with the ball in hand while Jan Frylinck (2/27) and Jean Bredenkamp (2/23) picked up the rest of the wickets.

The Cape Cobras reached the target in the 33rd over thanks to contributions by Gideon Conradie (62), Grant Edmeades (36*) and Keagan Petersen (32).
