THE Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras beat the bizhub Highveld Lions by 1 run and the Chevrolet Knights beat the Chevrolet Warriors by 13 runs as the MiWay T20 Challenge headed for a tight finish at the top of the log on Friday evening.

With the Nashua Titans and the Sunfoil Dolphins having their match washed out – the third time in a row this has happened to the Dolphins – there is a log jam developing as the franchises bid for the top three positions on the log that qualify for the knock-out phase.

The Lions remain top of the log with 24 points followed by the Knights on 22, the Titans on 21 and the Cobras on 20. The Dolphins have 18 points and can still get back into contention if they can get on to the field for a full 40 overs.

The highlight of Friday night’s play was unquestionably the stand of 128 in 10 overs between Owais Shah and Dane Vilas for the Cobras. Shah made an unbeaten 79 off 44 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes while Vilas’ contribution was an unbeaten 49 off 31 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes.

The Lions did well to get so close to victory with Chris Morris again impressing with an unbeaten 32 off 15 balls with 5 fours.

The Warriors looked to be in charge of their match against the Knights when they reached 72/2 in the 10th over in pursuit of a modest target of 128 but they fell apart in the second half of their innings with their last five batsmen failing to get out of single figures.

Jandre Coetzee had the remarkable figures of 3/7 in his 4 overs.

The match between the Titans and the Dolphins never got off the ground with the Titans reaching 79/3 in 10.3 overs before play was washed out.
