Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU George) cemented their number one spot in the Section A2 log when they beat Venda by an almighty 390 runs on Day Three of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) B Week in Oudtshoorn on Wednesday.

W Scholtz spearheaded the batting attack by scoring 188 runs and was supported by J Olivier (64) and B Carolus (55) who added vital half centuries to heap up a 444-run target for Venda. L Volkwyn picked up from yesterday's fifer and added another to his steadily growing account to make nonsense of the opposition's reply. Venda were all out for 53.

Durban University of Technology (DUT) take the second spot in the Section A2 log after their compelling nine-wicket defeat over Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). The men from Tshwane batted first and were bundled out for a scant 93 thanks to a fifer from S Mzileni and D Govender, who took three for 15.

Govender went on to lead the run chase, returning unbeaten for 62 to get his side the win.

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology continued its ways when they beat the University of Limpopo (Turfloop) by nine wickets and keep top spot in the Section A1 log. Limpopo were squashed out for 68 runs due to a terrific 7/13 spell by B Samsoodien. W Olwagen (54*) scored an unbeaten half century to get the required runs.

University of Zululand beat University of the North West (Mafikeng) by 21 runs.

In Pool B, the University of Fort Hare suffered a eight-wicket defeat to the South Western Districts Invitational XI and Mangosuthu University won their first match when they beat the University of Limpopo (MEDUNSA) by a convincing 30 runs.

The log standings shifted dramatically when it was discovered that University of Limpopo (Turfloop) and University of Venda were being represented by unregistered players. It is compulsory for every player representing a team in the USSA Weeks to be a registered student of the university in question. As a result, both teams have been penalised and lose all their log points, which have been transferred to their opponents in each relevant match.
