Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) held their nerve to beat Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU George campus) in the final of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) B Week on Friday. The win means CPUT will be promoted to the A Week for 2013.
NMMU managed 159 runs with B Carolus top scoring with 38 runs while Leading Bowler of the Tournament, L Volkwyn scored 28.
With a target of 160, W Olwagen and C Smith lead the reply, scoring 37 and 33 respectively to reach the required target despite Player of the Tournament, W Scholtz' 4/26. CPUT won by four wickets.
The third/fourth place match between Durban University of Technology and University of Zululand was abandoned due to rain along with the University of Venda/University of Limpopo (Turfloop) match which would determine seventh and eighth place.
DUT took third place with Zululand claiming fourth due to a better net run rate, while both Venda and Turfloop were disqualified from claiming a place for not playing registered university students.
In the fifth and sixth place play-off, North West University (Mafikeng) beat Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) by a convincing 63 runs.
TUT bowled Mafikeng out for what seemed a gettable 104 after asking them to bat first. T Sehlolo took three wickets for 32 while S Matjile and P Sako provided good back up, taking two wickets each. In reply, TUT struggled to keep their wickets as K Selaledi powered through the batting line-up, taking an incredible 6/16, with T Tongwane taking three wickets for 21.
