USSA A Weeks gets off to a positive start

The opening day of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) A Week saw some competitive cricket when the strongest universities in the land converged on Port Elizabeth on Monday.

 

In a tightly contested Section A1 match, University of Pretoria (TUKS), who shared last year's title with University of Stellenbosch due to a rained out final, opened their account with a win when they beat North West University (Vaal) by four runs.

 

Vaal won the toss and asked TUKS to bat first. They were bowled out for 138 runs with Bennie Ferreira and Dries Nell taking three wickets a piece. Sean Nowak of TUKS took an outstanding seven wickets for 24 to  restrict Vaal to 134 and secure a win for his team.

 

In the second A1 match, University of Western Cape (UWC) beat North West (PUKKE) by a convincing six wickets. Pukke were all out for 140 after winning the toss and batting first. Erasmus van der Dussen scored 64, while UWC's Nkululeko Serame took four for 10.

 

In reply, an unbeaten half century from Dale Campbell and Aview Mgijimba saw UWC lose only four wickets for their winning 141 runs.

 

In section A2, University of Johannesburg (UJ) completely dominated University of Stellenbosch (Steinhoff Maties), beating the 2011 co-champions by a compelling eight wickets.

 

Maties were skittled out for 135 runs after they were asked to bat first. Sean Jamison, Junior Dala and Phillip Havenga of UJ claimed two scalps each. In reply, Rob Farina (86*) scored the highest runs of the day to win the match for his side and was provided with good back up from Johann van der Merwe who scored 32.

 

Hosts, the Meccer Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) were not going to suffer defeat on their home ground on the first day. In the highest scoring match of the day, they beat University of Cape Town (UCT) by three wickets.

 

The visitors won the toss and chose to bat first, posting 232/7 with Wayne Lombard (68) and Michael Pote (56) going above the half century mark to set a competitive score.

 

NMMU replied with 233/7 with Edward Moore, David White and Corbyn Dolley chipping in with 37, 33 and 31* to get their side home.

 

In section B1, University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) suffered a 25-run defeat to the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), while the University of Free State (Kovsies) beat the Vaal University of Technology by six wickets.

 

In section B2, University of Fort Hare beat Central University of Technology (CUT) by a burly 71 runs. Fort Hare won the toss and were all out for 213. CUT could not contend with the bowling attack of Fort Hare, Clayton Bosch took three wickets for 17 while Jerry Nqolo took two for 10 despite Desmond De Kocker's 54 and Kagisho Pedi's 42.

 

In the last match of the day, Rhodes University beat Tshwane University of Technology by four wickets.
