It was another poor effort from the bat by the Chevrolet Dolphins in their Momentum One Day Cup match against the Sunfoil Dolphins at Buffalo Park in East London as they stuttered to a below par total of 201.

The only hero was the unheralded Christiaan Jonker, called up from the ranks of the South Western Districts provincial team, who managed to make much of a contribution with 84 while the opening attack of Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Kyle Abbott did the damage with the ball, sharing seven wickets.

Under cloudy skies, Davy Jacobs won the toss and chose to bat first.  The Warriors were on the back foot from the start as Ashwell Prince edged Tsotsobe’s sixth ball, and the former Warriors speedster accounted for Jon-Jon Smuts as well in a fiery opening spell which yielded him two for twenty in six overs.  The mandatory PowerPlay produced just 26 runs as the Warriors battled to get going.

Wickets fell at regular intervals, with Jonker being the exception.  The burly Jonker, who learnt his cricket in the North West, stood alone amongst an uninspiring batting line-up.  He could not afford to take too many chances, and needed 83 balls to bring up his first half-century at this level.  He eventually fell to Abbott on 84, an innings crafted off 110 balls with eight fours and two sixes.

One of these big hits came off Tsotsobe’s bowling, whose last four over cost him 23 runs.  Tsotsobe was bowled out in the 44th over.  Abbott looked after the tail, finishing with four for 38.

Some lusty hitting from Simon Harmer and Makhaya Ntini took the Warriors past 200, but it will take some exceptional bowling if the home side is to improve on their single win this season while the Dolphins know that a semi-final spot is still a possibility if they can chase down a target of just over four to the over.
