With the pool section phase of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) A Week done and dusted, teams look forward to the play-offs that will take place in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

Hosts, Mecer Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) booked their clash against University of Pretoria (TUKS) after beating co-defending champions Stellenbosch University (Steinhoff Maties) by three wickets on Wednesday. It has been a difficult week for Maties, who have yet to win a match in the tournament.

NMMU won the toss and fielded on a cold and grey morning. Devon Lochhead took three wickets for 30, with Corbyn Dolley and Chris Venske taking two wickets each to restrict Maties to 161 all out. Venske (48) returned to give a good batting performance and, along with Ian Herold (37), got NMMU to 167/7 for the win.

NMMU are unbeaten in the tournament and continue their top position in the section A2 log.

University of Western Cape (UWC) top the section A1 log despite their 48-run loss to North West University (Vaal) and will meet old rivals, University of Cape Town in the play-offs on Thursday.

Vaal were 169 all out after they were asked to bat first. Nkululeko Serame continued to pile on the wickets, taking 4/37 and Jody Lawrence three for 22.

In reply, UWC were 131 all out thanks to sensational bowling by Bennie Ferreira, who took an outstanding six wickets for 17 runs.

TUKS' match against North West University (PUKKE) was reduced to 45 overs after they got off to a late start due to a wet patch on the pitch, which first needed to be attended to. PUKKE won the toss and sent TUKS into bat first. TUKS scored 220/7 in their allotted overs.

North West's reply was inadequate, managing only 145/9 to give TUKS a solid 75-run victory.

In the last A2 pool match, UCT beat University of Johannesburg (UJ) by a convincing 99 runs. UCT scored 220/6 after winning the toss and batting first. Sebastian Golding top scored with 53 runs.

UJ could not compete with UCT's superior bowling attack. Wesley Bell took four for 23 while Golding and Geoff Dodds returned with two scalps each.

In Pool B, University of Fort Hare maintained their unbeaten streak when they beat Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) by four wickets. They top the section B2 log and will face University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), who lost to University of Free State by 30 runs, in the play-offs tomorrow.

Central University of Technology (CUT) beat Rhodes University by 92 runs, while Vaal University of Technology (VUT) beat University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) by five wickets.

CUT will go up against University Free State (KOVSIES) in the play-offs while TUT go head to head with VUT and UKZN will take on Rhodes.
