Joshua Dolley and Aldré Nel scored 90* and 59 to lead Mecer Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU Madibas) to an unequivocal, seven-wicket victory over University of the Western Cape (UWC) in the final of the University Sport South Africa(USSA) A Week at Axxess St Georges Park stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday. This victory marks NMMU's third USSA A Week title in four years.
NMMU won the toss and chose to field. Darren Benecke was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for 33 runs, while Ashley Fernandez top scored with 37. UWC posted 161/8 in their 50 overs.
It was not a high enough score however. Dolley's unbeaten 90 almost guaranteed victory for the hosts as the UWC bowlers struggled to take wickets. NMMU lost only three wickets for their 162 runs to claim the championship.
In the Pool B final between Fort Hare University and University of Free State (Kovsies). Fort Hare breezed to a six-wicket victory and in doing so, are promoted to the A2 section in next year's tournament.
Shannon Musto took four wickets for 31 and Gionne Koopman three for 20 to restrict Kovsies to 138 all out when they were asked to bat first. Ian Hartley was the pick of the batsmen, scoring 53 runs.
In reply, Jerry Nqolo and Mkhululi Calana returned with their wickets intact, having scored 44 and 27 to lead their side to victory.
In the Pool A third and fourth place final, University of Pretoria (TUKS) trounced University of Cape Town (UCT) by a resounding nine wickets. TUKS, who narrowly missed a spot in the final came out guns blazing when UCT won the toss and chose to bat first. GC Pretorius took an outstanding four wickets for just six runs, while Ernest Kemm and Gerhard Linde took two wickets each to demolish the batting side for 72.
TUKS made short work of the chase, Kemm (39*) and Sean Dickson (19*) played lead, scoring the required runs to win their third match this week and claim the number three spot.
Stellenbosch University (Steinhoff Maties) beat North West (Pukke) by seven wickets to take the fifth spot, while North West University (Vaal) were relegated to the B pool in the 2013 tournament after they suffered a 42-run defeat at the hands of University of Johannesburg (UJ).
In Pool B, University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) won the third and fourth place play-off after they beat Central University of Technology by 25 runs. Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) ended their disappointing week on a positive note when they beat Rhodes University by 21 runs.
Vaal University of Technology (VUT) are relegated to the 2013 USSA B Week after they were beaten by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) by a convincing six wickets.
An awards function was held later in the evening. The winners are as follows:
