WINS for Gauteng, Griquas and EP Coastal characterised day two of the under-17 rural week in Grahamstown on Tuesday.
The most impressive of the three victories was arguably Griquas’ 151-run drubbing of Kei under-17. Griquas hardly prospered in scoring 111 (K Adams 56, Jordan three for six) and 90 for four, but Kei were abject in response, being bowled out for 26 and 24 for five.
In bowling out Kei for 26 Williams took six for 10 for Griquas. He was backed up by PJ Smith, who took three for 12.
EP Coastal were similarly impressive in their 96-run victory over Kei under-19. EP Coastal posted 194 (JP Barkhuizen 70 in 72-balls, Ndamase six for 38) and then bowled Kei out for 108 and 29 for five. Only Lukhanyo Mtyida prospered with the bat for Kei, scoring 56 in their first innings; for Coastal Abongile Hashe took five for 26 and Xylon Dragner took five for 10 in the Kei first innings.
Gauteng also scored an impressive victory, beating Border Rural by 145 runs. Gauteng scored 245 for eight (Ruan Joubert 51, Neo Mahlonoko 57, Malusi Mbetshu five for 48) and 39 for two, while Border rural were disappointing in only managing 78 and 61 for five. Yusuf Patel took four for eight for Gauteng in Border’s first innings.
The other three matches were all draws. The KZN versus Border Villages match was a draw, Border’s 121 (Mlibo Tsewu 21, Mike Solomon four for 13, Ryan Smith four for 16) playing KZN’s 188. For KZN Sheldon Govender scored 38, Siyanda Zama scored 36, while Ayabulela Booi took four for 44.
The Boland versus Free State match was also drawn, Boland’s 150 playing Free State’s 145. In a day which belonged to the bowlers’, only Armande Botes was impressive with the bat; he scored 53 for Free State, with Ruan Terblanche taking six for 47 for Boland. Angelo Pienaar (four for 32) and Zillen Lamprecht (three for 25) shared seven wickets between them for Free State.
The day’s final match also ended in stalemate, EP Inland scoring 113 for six against North West’s 193. Ruan Pretorius top-scoring for them with 47.
