The rain-interrupted Momentum One-Day Cup final between the bizhub Highveld Lions and Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras was abandoned at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg late on Friday and will now be replayed on Saturday.

On a merry-go-round day, the covers were taken on and off several times by the ground staff due to the typical summer thundershowers.

There were also three floodlight failures, although none had any direct influence on the game, with umpires Marais Erasmus and Johan Cloete eventually deciding that enough was enough, more than six hours after the toss was held.

The match will now be replayed as a day game on Saturday with play starting at 10h00.

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras will be sure to breathe a huge sigh of relief after this result. They made a terrible start to the game and had reached a woeful 64 for four in 16.2 overs with their top-order destroyed by Hardus Viljoen.

The 23-year-old fast bowler claimed all the wickets to fall in a seven-over burst that cost 37 runs.

The home team, who won the toss and chose to bowl first, began promisingly thanks to superb bowling at the start from Viljoen, aided excellently by the miserly Pumelela Matshikwe. Viljoen claimed three wickets in 10 deliveries, the latter two sandwiching the first rain break.

Alviro Petersen played a big role in the initial breakthrough when he took a stunning one-handed catch diving to his right at second slip to snatch an Andrew Puttick (three) edge.

Viljoen then drew another edge, this time to Neil McKenzie at first slip, with another probing ball to the in-form Richard Levi (11).

That saw the Nashua Mobil Cape Cobras slip to 22 for 2, and after a brief rain delay and the match cut to 45 overs, Viljoen returned to trap Dane Vilas leg before wicket for a second-ball duck.

Stiaan van Zyl (12) was next in and tried to hit his team out of trouble by striking Viljoen for successive boundaries in the 11th over. But the fast bowler had his man next ball when a lifting delivery was edged to Quinton de Kock.

The Cobras went to 50 in the 14th over, before the rain returned and never entirely disappeared.

Those fans who had tickets for Friday’s final will be allowed to us the same ones on Saturday.
