Morne Morkel will join up with the Blue Label Telecoms T20 squad earlier than expected, after Chris Morris was ruled out of the remainder of the KFC T20 International series because of a left quad strain sustained in the first match at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Friday.

Morkel was only scheduled to take part in the final T20I on December 26 in Port Elizabeth, but will instead meet up with squad in East London on Saturday ahead of the second match at Buffalo Park on Sunday.

Proteas Team Manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee commented on Morris’ injury: “Chris will need a recovery period of at least two to three weeks after injuring his left quad during the game, that effectively rules him out of the series. When he was bowling his fourth over he went for the effort ball, where he tried to bowl a short one, that is where he aggravated the injury.

“He was always fifty-fifty coming into the series, but yesterday when he had his fitness test he passed all the clinical markers. It is one of those injuries that can happen at any time.”
