The bizhub Highveld Lions recovered strongly in the second session of their Sunfoil Series encounter against the Sunfoil Dolphins, as they reached 199 for four at tea at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead.

Brett Pelser (62) and Zander de Bruyn (50) added 116 unbroken runs for the fifth wicket, as the Dolphins bowlers lost their lenghts and paid the price. Having been 92 for four at lunch, the Lions added 107 runs after lunch.

The run rate accelerated towards four an over during the middle session, with Pelser clubbing eleven boundaries, and being especially harsh on Craig Alexander, whose second spell was a far cry from his first.

Dolphins skipper Daryn Smit had to resort to the part-time medium pace of Vaughn van Jaarsveld, who returned sound figures of nine overs for just 14 runs, as he kept a straight and full line and length.

Without a spinner, the Dolphins toiled on a dry-ish pitch, with the Durban heat also making things very uncomfortable.

Pelser reached his 14th first-class half-century off 61 balls, while his experienced partner, De Bruyn, reached the landmark on the brink of tea, off 97 balls. Both batsmen struck eight boundaries in getting to the half-tons, and theyb will look to build significantly on that in the final session of the day.

Gulam Bodi, who retired hurt after tweaking his ham-string in rather comical fashion off his first ball, has been diagnosed with a grade two hamstring tear, though he will bat if the Lions need him.
