The Chevrolet Warriors suffered an emphatic 136-run defeat at the hands of the bizhub Highveld Lion on the second day of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week in Stellenbosch on Friday. This makes the Lions the only undefeated team in the tournament so far.
Captain, Shaylen Pillay produced an all-round performance to help secure their victory. He weighed in 85 runs and also grabbed two wickets while conceding only nine runs. Pillay and Bradley Dial (56) shared a 108-run partnership for the sixth wicket. The team’s tail ender, Kagiso Rabada (40*) also scored some valuable runs to help his side to a competitive score of 247 all out.
Another highlight of the Lions’ innings was the hat-trick of Warriors seam bowler, Onke Nyaku (3/23). He dismissed Pillay with Shakier Abrahams assisting with the catch. He then removed Jayden Broodryk and Mpheto Bidli with the following deliveries.
Nyaku was also the best batsman for his side as they were bowled out for Nelson. He scored 26 of his side’s runs. Yaseen Valli (3/31) was the pick of the Lions’ bowlers.
The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras also recorded a convincing victory as they defeated the Sunfoil Dolphins by 138 runs at Pniel. The Cobras batted first and reached 271/7 in their allotted 50 overs thanks to half-centuries by captain David Beddingham (84) and opening batsman Hayes van der Bergh (80). They shared a 103-run partnership over the third wicket.
The Cobras then knocked the Dolphins over for 133 runs after having them in deep trouble at 29/5. Lizaad Williams (2/11) removed Mark Airey and Kyle Simmonds from the crease in the first over of the match without a run on the scoreboard. Justin Dill (3/18) also troubled the Dolphins’ batsmen and removed Sibonelo Makhanya in the second over of the match as the Dolphins stumbled to 2/3.
The Chevrolet Knights came out on top against the Nashua Titans, beating them by 17 runs. Andries Gous who scored a century for the Knights on the first day against the Lions, added another 67 runs to his total for the week as the Knights reached 267/6 in their 50 overs. The star for Knights was however South African Schools’ player, Vasili Orros (97) who just missed out on his century after trying to kick-on. Orros struck two sixes onto the distillery next to the field. In total he hit nine fours and five sixes. He faced only 72 deliveries in his exciting innings.
Orros and his captain, Diego Rosier (37) shared a 95-run partnership over the fifth wicket. Corbin Bosch (3/67) was the best of the Titans’
Jacques Snyman (57) helped the Titans to come close to the Knights with his half-century. Vincent Moore (31*) also weighed in with some valuable runs. The Knights’ spin bowler, Sine Ntshona (4/40) was the pick of their bowlers.
