The bizhub Highveld Lions went into lunch on day three of their Sunfoil Series
match against the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras, on 11 without loss, requiring a
further 113 runs for victory at Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday,
after dismissing the hosts for 169 in their second innings.
Stephen Cook and Quinton de Kock looked relatively untroubled in the six overs
they faced before lunch, with Cook on six and De Kock on four.
With Qaasim Adams and Johan Louw resuming the morning session on 81 for six,
the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras were desperate for some form of a partnership to
give them a chance in this match. But Louw fell in the fourth over of the
morning, when he was completely castled by a googly from Imran Tahir, for 12.
Adams brought up his half century three overs later, in 80 minutes, while he
and Charl Langeveldt added 63 runs for the 8th wicket. The pair raised their
50-partnership in just 32 minutes, off a staggering 29 balls, which included
six fours and a six.
Langeveldt then became Imran Tahir's second victim when he trapped the veteran
bowler in front for a well fought 19, which lasted two minutes short of an
hour. Langeveldt faced 44 balls while striking three boundaries.
Zander de Bruyn picked up his second wicket of the innings by trapping Beuran
Hendricks in front. Adams was then last man out, for a well played 88, becoming
de Bruyn's 8th wicket of the match. Adams spent 146 minutes at the crease,
facing just 92 deliveries while striking 10 boundaries and a six.
The bizhub Highveld Lions had won the toss on day one, and asked the home side
to bat first. Stiaan van Zyl top scored with 44 while Richard Levi and Dane
Vilas both scored 43, with Levi's innings lasting only 42 balls. Andrew Puttick
made a start as well, but as with the rest of the batting line-up, was not able
to kick on and was dismissed for 31.
De Bruyn had been the chief destroyer in the first innings, claiming 5-39 while
he received support from Imran Tahir, who took 2-14 and Cliffe Deacon, who
claimed 2-54.
The visitors then ended day on untroubled on 78 for one, De Kock the only man
to lose his wicket for 26, when he was bowled by Langeveldt. But Lizaad
Williams led a fight back on the morning of day two when he claimed three
wickets in the morning session, to reduce the men from Johannesburg to 131 for
six.
But a 110-run 7th-wicket partnership between Thami Tsolekile (58) and Deacon
(71) swung the match back in the the favour of the visitors, as they were
bowled out for 270, a lead of 46, 20 minutes after tea. Williams ended with
career best figures of 4-62.
The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras top order then batted atrociously as they were
skittled out cheaply, ending day two on 81 for six, a lead of only 35. Besides
the 88 runs from Adams, no other batsman passed the 20-run mark, with
Langeveldt next-best on 19.
Zander de Bruyn was once again the leading light for the bizhub Highveld Lions,
as he claimed 3-16 in the second innings, for a match haul of 8-55. De Bruyn
received excellent support from Ethan O'Reilly (2-25), Imran Tahir (2-41) and
the fit again Hardus Viljoen, who bowled far better in the second innings,
claiming 2-67.
