Grey College Bloemfontein's Sachinta Galhenhage scored an unbeaten 108 runs to help beat Hoërskool Hennenman by a resounding 127 runs in the first round of matches of the Coca-Cola Schools T20 of 2013. As the regional finals get closer, schools are looking to consolidate their performances to ensure that they are a part of the finals weekend in Stellenbosch in February.
Grey batted first, posting 185/3 with Julian Delicado adding a handy 44 runs. In reply, Hennenman were 58/8 after their 20 overs thanks to Barend de Klerk and Ewald Roberts, who took two wickets each.
In the Eastern Province region, Mzontsundu Senior Secondary School beat Loyiso Senior Secondary School by two wickets. Loyiso batted first and were bundled out for just 65 runs with S Mbane taking three wickets for 21 runs.
Mzontsundu just managed to chase down the score with S Mbane coming back again to top score with 25 runs.
In Gauteng, Alberton High School suffered a 60-run defeat at the hands of Trinity House who batted first, posting a competitive 159/5. Prashan Naidoo and Bradley Steven scored 44 and 43 not out respectively.
Alberton's reply was not good enough. Trinity House's bowlers did not give them the chance to score any unnecessary runs and could only manage 99/7 at the end of their 20 overs with Devin Viljoen taking 3/22.
As the school year gets into full swing, more schools will pick up where they left off in the competition and as regional finals draw nearer, so does the competitive nature of the competition rise.
