The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras allowed themselves a wide grin, but have put the celebrations on hold after clinching the Sunfoil Series trophy.

“We still want to pursue victory, so there won’t be any celebrations yet,” the victorious Sunfoil Series winning skipper, Justin Ontong, said after Friday’s second day of the match against the Chevrolet Knights.

“The key to our resurrection after the demoralizing first-innings batting performances against the Lions and the Dolphins was that we focused on winning each session of a game.

“We started doing this in the penultimate game of the competition against the Nashua Titans, and this is continuing against the Knights.

“We also emphasized the importance of securing a substantial first-innings score,” said Ontong.

Ontong said the team’s character was evident in the way they bounced back after the losses to the Lions and the Dolphins.

Experience was a key factor as the knowledge of how to deal with pressure situations clearly assisted the Cobras in getting through challenging moments of the competition.

“Johann Louw was fantastic throughout this campaign,” said Ontong in applauding the 33-year old seam bowler, who has been the pick of the attack with 43 wickets at an average of 17.55 in nine games.

“Beuran (Hendricks) was also impressive this season,” he added. The 22-year old right-handed express bowler has picked up 33 wickets in seven games.

“Stiaan (van Zyl) also excelled this season, and finished with two tons,” added Ontong.

“I thought Alistair (Gray) also performed admirably for us before his injury.

“It was heart-warming that Richard Levi replaced him and immediately made an impact with a century,” added Ontong.

“We are not finished. We want to win emphatically against the Knights, to gain momentum before the T20-competition. A winning culture is important, and an inspiration to our young players,” he said.
