The bizhub Highveld Lions ended their Sunfoil Series campaign on a high note, beating the Chevrolet Warriors by 125 runs on the stroke of lunch on Sunday to claim the runners-up spot on the final log.
Despite some resistance from Adrian McLaren and Wayne Parnell, the bowling efforts of Chris Morris and Cliffe Deacon were too good for the home team.
The Chevrolet Warriors resumed on 119 for four, and much of their hopes of scoring the further 271 runs needed rested on the shoulders of Arno Jacobs, who had raced to 69 on the third evening. However, he could only add four more today before being trapped in front by Morris, who accounted for the top four in the batting order. Jacobs scored 73 off 78 balls, including 12 fours and a six.
Wayne Parnell came in all guns blazing. He was particularly harsh on Imran Tahir, but also gave Deacon some tap. He dominated an 84-run partnership with McLaren before eventually falling to Tahir for 58, made off just 67 balls with ten fours. Simon Harmer kept an end going with McLaren for a while, adding 47 before Deacon returned to the attack with devastating effect.
The last four wickets fell for just eight runs, three of them going to the burly left-arm seamer. The last three batsmen failed to score. Aya Gqamane did lay bat on ball, but holed out to Hardus Viljoen at long-off. Viljoen took the field but was not fit to bowl due to a side strain. That left McLaren stranded on 65, made off 114 balls. He was not as adventurous as his team mates, hitting just five fours and a six.
Morris finished with the excellent figures of four for 31 in 17 overs. Deacon was expensive in claiming three for 70 in 16.3, and Imran Tahir went at five to the over although he did pick up two wickets.
Neil McKenzie was named Sunfoil Man of the Match, contributing 150 runs in his two innings.
The win secured second spot on the Sunfoil Series log for the bizhub Highveld Lions, but the Chevrolet Warriors finish in fourth in what was a cluttered middle of the table, some five points adrift of the Sunfoil Dolphins.
Final points: bizhub Highveld Lions 15.14, Chevrolet Warriors 4
