D Makua and L Moolman scored 91 and 77 respectively to bat Mpumalanga to a 139-run victory over Border Aloes on the first day of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Rural Senior Cricket Week in Polokwane on Thursday.
Mpumalanga were bowled out for 315 at the end of their 50 overs, thanks to further contributions with the bat by R Neetling (33) and C de Beer (32) to get their side to their daunting total. Border managed 176/9 in their allotted overs, thanks to the tight bowling of M Nepgen 3/25 as well as L Mtombeni and G Vosloo who took two wickets a piece. Mpumalanga did not give an inch, staying as ruthless with the ball as they were with the bat to get their tournament off to a positive start.
F Brooks took an exceptional six wickets for 29 runs to give Boland East a 40-run win over Free State (FS). Boland batted first and were skittled out for 147 in 38 overs. W Ebrahim top scored with 52 runs.
Free State's batsmen could not contend with Brooks' golden arm and all faded in the background. G Ferreira also added two wickets to compound the assault, leaving FS all out for 107 runs.
In the match between North West and Border Country, the latter held their nerve for a four-wicket victory thanks to T Dithole, J Kilana and T Mbanda who scored 49, 39 and 38 runs respectively to get their side to 174/6 after North West, who batted first, gave them a 171-run target.
In other matches, KwaZulu-Natal Coastal (KZN Coastal) beat EP Grahamstown by two wickets, while Boland West beat the hosts, Limpopo by three wickets.
