Aaron Phangiso and David Miller have been released to play in Friday’s round of the RAM Slam T20 Challenge. The table-topping bizhub Highveld Lions travel to Cape Town to play the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras, the Sunfoil Dolphins host the Chevrolet Knights in Durban and the Nashua Titans play the Chevrolet Warriors in Benoni.
The pair are part of the Castle Lager Proteas’ ODI squad currently preparing for the first Momentum ODI in Bloemfontein, and will join up with the squad on Saturday.
Dale Steyn will link up with the squad for the second ODI in Centurion next week as initially planned.
Proteas coach, Gary Kirsten said: “The RAM Slam T20 challenge has entered a crucial phase with all teams vying for the top league positions so we felt it would be ideal for everyone involved if Aaron and David were released to play today. Every player is important to our squad, but have always had the policy of trying to give players game time where possible.
“Dale bowled close to 180 overs during the Tests against New Zealand and Pakistan and was always going to be rested for the first ODI of the series as part of our rotation policy with the bowlers whether he was with us or not.
“At this stage we are waiting on the fitness of Morne Morkel who is recovering from a hamstring injury. If he fails to recover in time, we need to look at it positively because it is an opportunity for another player to be tested at this level.”
