The batsmen laid a strong foundation for the Franchise Colts, leading to their first victory when they beat the SA Rural XI by 40 runs in the third match of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Future Cup tournament in Kimberley on Friday.
The Rural XI won the toss and chose to field. Edward Kemm and Zakir Kathrada shared a 44-run opening partnership before it was broken by Erik Wyma who removed Kemm for 15 at the end of the fifth over. Kathrada followed two balls later when Thembela Mbada came into the attack, dispatching him for 25. Grant Edmeades (37) shared a 50 partnership with Daniel Sincuba (23) after skipper, Diego Rosier was dismissed by Mbada for four.
Sumanth Sunkari and Thandolwethu Mnyaka chipped in with 26 and 18 to get the Colts to 166/6 at the end of their innings. Mbada and Thomas Kannemeyer returned the most notable bowling figures, taking 2/24 and 2/37 respectively.
SA Rural could only manage 126/9 in reply. Matome Modiba was the leading run scorer with 28 from 32 balls. The rest of the order could not score more than 13 thanks to a pumped up bowling attack lead by Bokang Mosena who took 3/26. Daryn Dupavillon was also impressive, taking two vital wickets at the start and at the end of the innings just when his side needed them.
The Colts take on the SA USSA XI at 18:00.
