Niewoudt century leads St Patrick's to first win

Griffon Niewoudt scored an unbeaten 131 runs to race St Patrick's College CC  to their first win in the 2013 Momentum National Club Championships in Pretoria on Tuesday. They beat the Free State's Kovsies Cricket Club by six wickets.

Ian Finlay posted an undefeated 97 to get Kovsies to 259/6 at the end of their innings in the Section One match. Heinrich Roberts and JJ Naude added 50 and 40 respectively to get their side to the competitive score with Roy Adams and Roy Williams taking two scalps each.

Diego Rosier contributed 50 runs to the St Patrick's bottom line to help them to 264/4. They won with five balls to spare.

In other matches, Neil McKenzie and Devon Conway lead the Gunn & Moore Old Edwardians (Old Eds) to a solid, 39-run victory over the Steinhoff Maties at Sinovich Park. McKenzie and Conway made 82 and 77 respectively, while Stephen Cook chipped in with 35 to get the side to 251/5 at the end of their allotted overs.

Maties were bowled out for 212 in their reply, with Mark van Heerden leading the run scoring with 72 and Uwe Birkenstock adding 56 but to no avail, as Etienne Gerber and David Sartor took three wickets each and Shaylen Pillay two to get a well deserved win.

Simon Harmer was the main destroyer in the Mecer Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Madibas' match against Good Hope Cricket Club. He took four wickets for 23 in seven overs to restrict them to 121 all out in 35.4 overs after Good Hope batted first.

Edward Moore made quick work of the chase, returning unbeaten for 84 to get his side to an easy victory. The Madibas top the Section One log with 10 points.

Assupol TUKS hold a firm grasp to the number one log position in Section Two after they beat the Hollywoodbets.net Crusaders by four wickets, while Union Stars suffered a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Collect Cellular Western Province Cricket Club.

In the last match of the day, ABSA NWU-PUKKE CC beat Benoni Northerns by a massive 116 runs when they met at TUKS Oval. PUKKE scored 278/6 in their 50 overs after skipper, Rassie van der Dussen (97) narrowly missed out on a century while Nicky van den Bergh added 46.

Stefan Gericke was the leading wicket taker with 3/50 while Armand Erasmus and CJ Ferreira took two wickets each to see Benoni Northerns bundled out for 160.
