CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) on Sunday congratulated the Blue Label Proteas on their historic T20 International Series victory over Sri Lanka.
The Proteas won the first of three matches at Colombo on Friday and clinched the series with a game to spare whey won the second match at Hambantota on Sunday. The final match will be played at Hambantota on Tuesday.
“This is a magnificent achievement,” commented CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat. “Not only have they won South Africa’s first ever limited overs bilateral series in Sri Lanka but this triumph has to be seen against the background of a disappointing ODI series. This turn-around is indeed morale boosting.
“What they have done against the No. 1 ranked ICC T20 international team speaks volumes for their fighting spirit and determination to make our country proud again.
“We are now just six months away from the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh next year and this result will give the players and the management team a huge boost.
“Russell Domingo is to be congratulated on his first series victory as national head coach. The leadership that he and captain Faf du Plessis have displayed has been truly inspiring.
“The whole squad have shown that they are quick learners and that they have taken on board some valuable lessons from the ODI defeats on how to cope with conditions that are peculiar to Sri Lanka.
“It has been a successful few days for South African cricket with this series win coming on top of the unofficial Test series victory our A side achieved against their Australian counterparts.
“I am now looking forward to sit down with Russell and the other senior team leaders on their return to South Africa as we look to build on this success.”
