Interim coach of the Momentum Proteas Women, Hilton Moreeng, says the current T20 International series against Bangladesh Women will give a clearer understanding of the areas to work on ahead of the ICC Women's World Twenty20 in Bangladesh next year.
The Proteas lead the three-match series 1-0 after an emphatic nine-wicket win in the opening match, but want to improve on a number of areas ahead of the second match at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday.
" Its always important to start a series off with a win, it sets you up for the remainder of the matches," Moreeng said at the squad's training session on Friday afternoon. "I still feel our performance in the field can still improve; our bowlers can still raise the bar and the entire unit needs to be sharper in the field.
"This is an extremely important series for us," he continued. "It will give us an idea as far as our combinations are concerned and it will help us gauge where we are as a team because we are looking to improve with every game. We want to have our ducks in a row by the time the World Cup arrives and this type of preparation will ensure that we are able to compete and challenge for the trophy."
Vice-captain, Trisha Chetty, is the most capped player in the squad with 28 appearances and heads the core of a senior player group featuring Mignon du Preez, Sunette Loubser, Shibnam Ismail and Dane van Niekerk to name a few. Moreeng awarded two new caps in the opening match, and has looked for a key balance of experience and youth, which he hopes will create a winning environment.
"I’m happy for them," he said of the recent debutants, Alexis le Breton and Lizelle Lee. "They have put in the performances throughout the season and have been rewarded with national selection. They have settled in well and that helps us as a team because the quicker we gel as a unit the easier it will be for us to achieve our goals."
The second T20I starts at 14h00 at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom
