A hat-trick by all-rounder Marizanne Kapp was the highlight of the Momentum Proteas Women’s nine- wicket win in the second T20 International against Bangladesh Women at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday.

The Proteas now hold an unassailable 2-0 lead, with one match remaining in the series.

“Winning the series is a great way for us to start the season,” the recently crowned Cricket South Africa Women’s Player of the year said. “We haven’t played a lot of cricket together in the off-season so it was important for us to start this series off positively. Hopefully we can make it 3-0 tomorrow and move that momentum into the ODI series starting next week.”

Kapp was named as the player of the match for her figures of 4/6 after the Proteas restricted the visitors to another total below 100. Bangladesh batted with intent after electing to take first strike, but were unable to counter an improved bowling performance from South Africa.

The first of Kapp’s victims was Bangladesh captain, Fargana Hoque (4), who top-edged to Dane van Niekerk at slip. She achieved her milestone in the 19th over when she had Rumana Ahmed caught behind for a duck, and bowled Ritu Moni and Fahima Khatun with successive deliveries.

“ I enjoyed my bowling today, I stuck to my plans and that really paid off for me,” she said jubilantly. “ I wasn’t really thinking about the hat-trick, my game plan was to bowl line and length and fortunately that plan came off.”

Trisha Chetty (38 not out) and Lizelle Lee (37) handled the Proteas’ run-chase with ease, with the Proteas reaching the total in the 12th over. The big-hitting Lee finally played to her reputation, and played an impressive innings which included five fours and a six.

The final match of the series takes place on Sunday at Senwes Park.
