The Momentum Proteas women are ready for their second inbound tour of the season. They take on Sri Lanka from 24 October to 3 November 2013 in a three-match One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 (T20) series in Potchefstroom.
The team are coming off a successful outing against Bangladesh, white-washing them in both the ODI and T20 series. Sri Lanka are just one place ahead of South Africa in the Reliance ICC Women’s ODI rankings in fifth place. Team coach, Hilton Moreeng, is happy with his team’s preparation and feels his side is ready for this next step in the side’s ICC Women’s World T20 preparation. The competition will take place in Bangladesh in March 2014.
Moreeng believes the side is ready to take the confidence gained from the Bangladesh tour into this next one. He is especially satisfied with the manner in which his three newest players have gelled with the rest of the team. Liezelle Lee, Alexis Le Breton and Nadine Moodley made successful international debuts during the Bangladesh tour.
“I must reiterate how proud I am of the team’s performances against Bangladesh,” he said. “They really handled pressure situations well and the senior players were great mentors to the youngsters, while allowing their experience to shine during the difficult periods in the matches. The previous tour for us was the beginning stage of our preparation for the World T20 next year. We wanted to see if the side could put on brilliant performances in every kind of circumstance and they passed with flying colours. They played consistently well and showed progress throughout the tour and that makes a coach happy.”
He is looking forward to facing another sub-continent side. The exposure to their style of playing will serve the South Africans in good stead during the upcoming ICC event, Moreeng believes.
“Now, going into the Sri Lanka tour, we pick up where we left off. I want to see a ruthless performance every time,” he continued. “I’d like to see that dog fight and consistency they showed against Bangladesh. Our captain, Mignon du Preez, scored her maiden ODI century in the last tour, I’m looking forward to seeing more runs coming from her and for the good individual performances to rub off on the rest of the team. We are mentally and physically ready and on the right track looking forward to the World T20, which is our top priority right now.”
Sri Lanka arrive in South Africa today and will play a warm-up match against the South Africa Emerging team on Tuesday, 22 October.
