Cary-Smith century leads Welkom Gymnasium to opening victory

The first round of the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge got off to a good start in the Free State this past weekend. JL Cary-Smith scored 108 runs to bat Welkom Gymnasium to their first win of the season against staunch rivals, Welkom High School.

Gymnasium post 214/4 after batting first, with Pieter Markos and Wiaan Odendaal adding 51 not out and 46 respectively. Welkom High were not equipped to handle their confident rivals and were restricted to 102/7 in their 20 overs, with Odendaal taking two wickets for nine runs.

In other matches in the province, HTS Louis Botha beat Centre of Excellence by nine wickets, St Andrews beat Sentraal by 54 runs, HTS Welkom suffered a 72-run loss to Sasolburg and Voortrekker High snuck a two-wicket victory passed HS Witteberg.

In the Border region, Kwakomani Senior Secondary beat Illinge Senior Secondary by 56 runs. Siphiwo Ndaba scored 70 to lead Kwakomani to 115/7 when they chose to bat first. Abongile Tshweza, Aphiwe Ngqongqo and Lutho Hadi took 4/14, 3/21 and 2/7 respectively to have Illinge skittled out for 56 runs.

Upington High School were the big winners in the Griqualand West region this week. They crushed Carl van Heerden High School by a massive 115 runs.

The KwaZulu-Natal Coastal region was a hive of activity. Kearsney College dominated Amanzimtoti, bundling them out for 88 runs to win by 10 wickets. Felixton College beat Uthungulu High School by eight wickets, despite Simpiwe Zungu’s 55 runs.

In other matches in the region, Ashton College beat Tongaat by 15 runs, Durban High School beat Crawford La Lucia by 80, New Forrest High suffered a 23-run loss to DNC and Northwood won their match against Hillcrest by nine wickets. HS Richards Bay lost to Grantleigh High School by a narrow five runs, while HS Kuswag beat HS Verulam by five wickets, Kingsway High School beat Lower Highway by seven wickets and Glenwood Boys High beat Thomas More College by seven wickets.

 Port Shepstone High got off to a good start, winning their match against Southern Natal by 73 runs while Pinetown Boys High suffered a seven-wicket loss to Gelofte High and St Henry’s beat George Campbell by four runs, while Clifton beat Sunfoil by six wickets.

In the KZN-Inland region, half-centuries by Sanele Mchunu (67) and Simesihle Zulu (61*) led Alexandra High (PMB) to a 16-run victory against Maritzburg Christian School. Treverton College beat Grace College by 95 runs, Wartburg Kirchdorf beat Wembley College by five wickets and Weston High beat Howick by seven runs.

In the Northerns region, Kyle van Schalkwyk and Chris van Niekerk were unbeaten for 80 and 57 runs respectively to give Cornwall Hill College a 61-run victory against HS Wagpos.

The next round starts on Thursday.
