THE composition of teams in the Momentum One-Day Cup has undergone a subtle change following the departure of five players to the UAE ahead of South Africa’s one-day series against Pakistan. It is the bizhub Highveld Lions who have the most to think about for Friday’s clash with the Chevrolet Knights.

The Lions have lost Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Quinton de Kock from the side that beat the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras on Sunday, and only expect to regain the services of Alviro Petersen and Thami Tsolekile when they return from the UAE next week.

That has left the Lions without an experienced wicketkeeper for Friday’s game at Chevrolet Park, forcing them to draft in the uncapped Dominic Hendricks at a time when they are trying to make a charge up the table.

“It’s a newish challenge for us at the Lions - in the past we have rarely lost players to the national side and now we’ve got a few so we knew it was going to be a bit disruptive,” said captain Stephen Cook.

“We’ve thought about this and planned ahead, and in a couple of days we’ll get Alviro and Thami back. We’ve just got to mix and match as we go along and deal with the challenge that many other sides have faced in previous seasons.”

While the Knights have lost kingpin Ryan McLaren to the Proteas squad, Johan van der Wath will undergo a fitness test and could make his first appearance of the season.

After being bowled out for 90 by The Unlimited Titans on Wednesday afternoon, stand-in skipper Nicky Boje has told his players to erase the match from their memories.

“We can’t really go on Wednesday’s game, because it was just a terrible cricket wicket,” said Boje. “It took somebody (Titans batsman Jacques Rudolph) to break his hand to see how bad it was. But that’s part of the game and you have to move forward.

“We said to the guys that it’s a pity we got a game like this at this stage of the tournament, having lost the first three, but we’ve just got to try and keep our heads up.”
