Petersen: We're still playing for pride

bizhub Highveld Lions captain Alviro Petersen has struggled to put a finger on exactly what has plagued his side since he returned from Proteas duty, but suspects that they could do with some self-imposed pressure when they meet the Chevrolet Knights in a seemingly meaningless fixture on Friday.

The two sides are bottom of the Momentum One-Day Cup table, with only pride to play for as they slug it out to avoid the tournament’s wooden spoon.

“I’ve said a few times over the last two years that under pressure this team performs well, but when there is nothing riding on the game it’s almost as if guys just go through the motions, and that’s our biggest challenge,” said Petersen.

“Today will be the same challenge - to try and get guys up for it, because we know that there’s almost nothing in it.”

Although Petersen confirmed that the Lions may make changes to their side, he insisted that caps will not be handed out in gratuitous fashion.

“It’s not going to be a free-for-all sort of thing,” he said. “We’re still playing for pride so we want to make sure we finish the competition well and win this game. If guys deserve opportunities then they will get opportunities, and that’s what we’re doing.”

The Knights lead the Lions by two points ahead of Friday’s clash at Bidvest Wanderers Stadium, and beat the Lions by four wickets when the two sides met two weeks ago in a rain-interrupted encounter that went down to the last ball.
