The bizhub Highved Lions ended a disappointing Momentum One-Day Cup season in poor fashion as they were bowled out for 141 in an eight-wicket defeat to the Chevrolet Knights at Bidvest Wanderers Stadium on Friday.
The defeat consigned a side who shared the trophy last season to last place in the 2013/14 competition, with the Knights chasing their target in just 36 overs to pick up a bonus point and finish seven points clear of the Lions.
Quinton Friend was the chief destroyer for the Knights, picking up the key wickets of Stephen Cook and Alviro Petersen in his first spell as the Lions collapsed to 37 for three after winning the toss and electing to bat.
Friend returned later on to dismiss Pumelela Matshikwe and Temba Bavuma, who top-scored with 45, and consign the Lions to their lowest ever score against the Knights - their previous lowest was 169 in Bloemfontein during the 2007/08 season.
In reply the Knights proved that there were few demons in the pitch as Lefa Mosena (34) and Reeza Hendricks put on 71 for the first wicket.
After Rilee Rossouw had contributed a quick 25, Hendricks went to his half-century from 85 deliveries and then finished the job along with Dean Elgar.
Both franchises will now turn their attention to the Sunfoil Series, which gets underway on 21 November.
