SPORTS fans are in for a treat this festive season as the perfect Christmas gift is now on sale.

The Road to Number One DVD is a wonderfully compiled documentary that showcases the incredible seasons that have seen the Castle Lager Proteas Test Team assume the top spot in the ICC World Test Rankings. It’s a position that the team still currently enjoys.

Cricket South Africa (CSA), the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), Moonsport Productions and Castle Lager all teamed up to ensure that fans in South Africa and around the world enjoy the journey taken by Graeme Smith’s men to reach the pinnacle of Test cricket.

Exclusive behind the scenes content, footage never seen before and insightful interviews are all part of this 70-minute documentary. As an added bonus, fans will get 2 extra discs showcasing highlights of last year’s England and Australian tours.

“I have enjoyed this incredible journey before returning to CSA in my current position,” commented CSA Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat. “Like all South African cricket lovers, I have been most impressed by the spectacular rise of the Proteas to the top of the world rankings. The manner in which it was achieved in tough away triumphs in England and Australia is especially noteworthy.

“I can think back to the days when I was involved as the convener of selectors and we dreamed about developing winning combinations and players that could stand up to the rigours of Test match cricket.  Well, the Proteas and many of our players are now heroes around the cricketing world.

“Graeme and his team deserve all the accolades and I am grateful for this precious visual recording of our team’s achievements. Future generations will be able to see our current legends in action and aspire to emulate them. I wish to thank all our partners for this notable contribution to cricket’s literature.”

Proteas Castle Lager Test captain Graeme Smith commented: “We’ve experienced many highlights throughout our journey to No.1 and we’d like nothing better than our number one fans to experience the nerves, joy and pain that we went through while getting there. I get goose-bumps just thinking about all the memorable moments, so hopefully this DVD will bring our fans closer to the team and what the Protea fire environment is all about. The behind-the-scenes footage is extremely special, every raw emotion is captured and it gives the fans a clearer idea of what being crowned as number one has meant to the team.”

SACA CEO Tony Irish commented: “What fans often don’t see is the inside workings of the team and how the team culture works. In this DVD, these are told by the players themselves.”

Philip Key, CEO of Moonsport Productions, commented: “Working with the Castle Lager Proteas Test Team has been a privilege. What an exhilarating experience to have access to that amount of talent this country has to offer.”

Alastair Hewitt, General Manager: Castle Lager and Sports Sponsorship, commented: “Castle Lager have been the proud sponsor of the Proteas Test Cricket Team for 20 years, a remarkable journey that gives credence to “Standing the TEST of time”. The road to number 1 is a fascinating visual account of the power of a team of really talented cricketers who came together to unite a nation.

“We are a true super fan of our Proteas team at Castle Lager and will continue to be just that. As we enter the next chapter of our story, the challenge will be to maintain our status in the Test cricket arena and as the equally proud sponsor of the One-Day Team, to start building our strategy to become the number one 50 overs team in the World in 2015!”

The Road to Number One DVD is available at all leading retail stores and will sell for R229.00. The DVD can also be purchased online through www.cricket.co.za or www.kalahari.com for R199.00
