STIAAN VAN ZYL of the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras has bagged the Sunfoil Series Sizzler of the Month award for the month of November following his performances in scoring back-to-back centuries in the first two rounds of matches.

The Sizzler of the Month award is worth R15 000.

Van Zyl scored 167 not out in his side’s opening match against the Sunfoil Dolphins at the Pietermaritzburg Oval and followed it with 164 against The Unlimited Titans at Sahara Willowmoore Park.

He is currently the leading runs scorer in the competition with an aggregate of 350 at an average of 116.66.

Other players who came strongly into contention were his Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras team mate, Beuran Hendricks, the bizhub Highveld Lions duo of Stephen Cook and Hardus Viljoen, and Chevrolet Warriors all-rounder Simon Harmer. Hendricks and Viljoen are currently the joint leading wicket-takers in the competition.

“Congratulations to Stiaan for being the first winner of the Sunfoil sizzler award. It is well merited,” commented Cricket South Africa (CSA) Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. “Performing at first-class level is essential and consistency is the key to having a successful professional career.”

The South African Cricketers’ Association Most Valuable Player index (SACA MVP) will be used during the duration of the Sunfoil Series as the measuring tool in determining the Sunfoil Sizzler of the Month.

The SACA MVP is calculated using an internationally recognised formula which takes into account every discipline in the game of cricket.  Batting, bowling, fielding, captaining and winning are all factored in within the context of each individual match. Individual player performances in pressure situations, for example, carry more weight; thus players who deliver when their team needs them most, earn more points.

The SACA MVP latest ranking standings are updated weekly on the SACA website (www.saca.org.za), and may be viewed ‘per competition’ or by having a look at the ‘overall’ standings.
