Day Two of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week started with South Africa Universities’ opening batsman, Kirwin Christoffels (98) just missing out on recording a century when his side (Chevrolet Warriors) took on the bizhub Highveld Lions at Bridge House in Franshoek on Monday. The match ended up rained out after the Warriors completed their innings.
Christoffels was supported well by Lloyd Brown (76), who represented the national unduer-19 side last year when they toured India. They shared a notable 98-run partnership for the third wicket, while the Lions’ Kagiso Rabada (2/44) - a SA U19 teammate of Brown’s - returned the best bowling figures.
Three spin bowlers have put up their hands with good performances in the first two days of the tournament. Lance Roelfse (Warriors), Greg Oldfield (Sunfoil Dolphins) and Sine Ntshona (Chevrolet Knights) have all given the selectors food for thought. Oldfield helped the Dolphins to a 37-run victory with his unbeaten 38 in his side’s total of 110/4 in their recalculated 34 overs against the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras.
The Cobras had to score 143 in 33 overs according to the Duckworth/Lewis method. The Dolphins won the match after the Cobras could only manage 73/7 in 22.4 when rain interrupted play for the final time. The hosts’ South African Schools player, Clyde Fortuin (21) scored the most of his side’s runs.
The Knights’ spin bowlers Ntshona (3/27 in seven overs) and Sean Whitehead (1/17 in six overs) restricted the South African under-17 side to 124/7 before rain stopped play at Pniel. Their captain, Andrew Rushmere (25) offered the most resistance.
The Unlimited Titans recorded a six-wicket victory over Zimabwe in a match which was also affected by the rain. Their spin bowler, Leus du Plooy (2/27) was his side’s best bowler for a second match in a row.
