The bizhub Highveld Lions finished their Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week in grand fashion when they beat the South Africa under-17s (U17) by a convincing seven wickets in Stellenbosch on Thursday. They remain undefeated in the competition.
The U17s were bowled out for 162 runs after they elected to bat first. They did not have the best of starts, limping to 45/5 at the start of the 17th over, thanks to impressive bowling by Jayden Broodryk and Brandon Glover who had taken two wickets each at that point. It was the intervention of Keith Dudgeon that saved the U17s’ innings. He scored 53 off 67 balls to steer his side out of trouble and help them to a respectable total. Glover and Broodryk finished with 3/28 and 3/41 respectively, with Kagiso Rabada providing good back up with his two wickets for 28.
The Lions’ reply began with a solid 75-run opening stand between Angus Ellis-Cole (40) and Lee Gruskin (60) before it was broken by Lesego Senokwane (2/48). They lost Isaac Dikgale for six but Bradley Dial (25*) and Yaseen Valli (18*) put on a good 36-run partnership to reach their target comfortably.
The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras pulled off the week’s biggest win when they beat the Chevrolet Warriors by 194 runs. The Cobras’ Clyde Fortuin lead the run scoring with an notable 78 off 80 balls. Jason Smith and Riaz Sader added 55 and 48 respectively to help their side to an imposing 277/7.
The Warriors reply was sorely lacking. Niel Botha and Keagan Wheeler returned outstanding figures of 4/15 and 3/22 respectively to have them 83/9 at the end of the match.
In the other matches, The Unlimited Titans beat the Chevrolet Knights by five wickets while the Sunfoil Dolphins beat Zimbabwe by 97 runs.
