CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) today congratulated Western Province on winning the CSA Provincial three-day title.

Western Province clinched the title when they beat Eastern Province by an innings and 149 runs in the final round of matches played from Thursday to Saturday last week.

“Western Province were indeed worthy champions having finished their campaign in great style,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat.

“It is pleasing to see the title race going right down to the wire with North West also in the running in their final match against Northerns. Had they won that match they would have finished a mere 0.12 points behind Western Province.  A closely run fight indeed”.

North West were held to a draw after leading by 277 runs on the first innings.

“It was encouraging to see the provinces responding positively to CSA’s incentivised plan for the Affiliates to give playing opportunities to more black African players. A total of 74 African players were given opportunities by the 13 provinces and, of these, approximately half played in at least six of the 13 matches.

“We look forward to seeing some of these talented players progressing through to Franchise level.”

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal Inland will be hoping to complete the limit overs double when they take on Gauteng in the CSA Provincial T20 Challenge Final in Johannesburg on Saturday, 5 April.

Earlier this season they won the CSA Provincial One-Day title. They were clear winners of the southern pool of the T20 Challenge while Gauteng clinched the northern pool ahead of Griquas when they beat Namibia in their final pool match on Sunday.
