CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) today congratulated both the men’s Proteas Blue Label Telecoms squad and the women’s Proteas Momentum squad on reaching the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup being played in Bangladesh.

Both sides will play their semi-final matches on Friday in Dhaka and both games will be televised live to a massive global audience. The men will take on India while the women will play against England.

“Like the West Indies, we can be very proud of both our teams having qualified for the semi-finals. This is very special indeed,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat.

“It’s pleasing to see such returns following the solid preparation by the players, management staff and especially the two Head coaches, Russell Domingo and Hilton Moreeng, who are both new to global ICC events.

“Coming on top of our recent triumph in the ICC under-19 World Cup is just reward for the tremendous efforts put in by many people in our national cricket system and reflects the healthy state of the game in South Africa.

“Our Proteas have always been among the world’s elite and it is highly encouraging that our women are proving their worth too. Their narrow defeat against Australia, the defending champions, and their well-merited victory over the previously unbeaten New Zealand team is rewarding for the efforts we have directed towards improving performance.

“There have been a number of reasons for their growth, not least being the support of team sponsor, Momentum, which enabled us to award ground-breaking national contracts to the senior players.

“Our new state-of-the-art High Performance Centre (HPC), which required a large investment and will now serve as the nerve centre for all our national teams, will help us reach even greater levels.

“On behalf of all South Africans I wish to extend good luck and best wishes to both our teams for the semi-finals.”

Rob Fleming, Chief Marketing Officer, Blue Label Telecoms, commented: “We are delighted that the Proteas have qualified for the semi-finals, and what is most encouraging is the mental strength and character they have demonstrated in reaching this milestone, which will stand them in good stead for the knock-out matches.”

Charlene Lackay, head of external communication at Momentum, commented: “We could not be prouder of our ladies for this historic win.  They have put in the work and now have something great to show for their commitment and dedication.  It just shows what can be achieved with a little momentum.  Friday will be an epic day for South African cricket as the nation gets together to cheer for both our teams.”

Proteas men’s captain, Faf du Plessis, congratulated the women’s side on their breakthrough win. “Congratulations to the Momentum Women's Proteas on making the semi-finals. It’s a fantastic achievement against quality opposition and in tough conditions. It’s not often that South Africa has such a strong presence in a World Cup, so it’s a really proud moment for our country.

“They showed a lot of character and determination, something that is synonymous with this special Proteas brand. I hope we can both do the country proud in our respective semi-finals on Friday.”
