Ashwell Gavin Prince
|

|
Ashwell Prince made his Test debut under testing circumstances against a rampant Australia side in 2002 and had to wait until the 2004/05 summer to establish himself as a permanent member of the Castle Lager Test squad when he made a maiden Test century against Zimbabwe and followed that with away centuries against the West Indies and Australia.
He gradually established his average in the high 40s and had a golden run in a 12-month spell from January 2008 to January 2009 when he scored 5 centuries including 4 in the space of 7 Tests against England, Bangladesh and Australia. He holds numerous partnership records against various countries including the South African all-time sixth wicket record of 271 with Mark Boucher. This broke a record that had been set in 1970.
He has filled a key role in the Test side in the traditional left-handed position in the middle-order and has been at his best when the team has been under pressure. He is also one of the best outfielders in the side and, in spite of advancing years, is still one of the quickest in the field.
He represented the Proteas at the 2007 World Cup.
