Proteas flex their muscles

| THE Proteas’ Castle Lager squad started to flex its collective muscle ahead of the tour of New Zealand when both JP Duminy – his 14th – and Mark Boucher – his 10th – scored first-class centuries in the penultimate round of SuperSport Series matches at Sahara Park Newlands on Saturday.
Hashim Amla was also in good form, making 93 for the Sunfoil Dolphins against the bizhub Highveld Lions at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead.
Duminy and Boucher shared a fourth wicket partnership of 176 that enabled the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras to take control of their match against the Chevrolet Knights. Duminy made 104 (202 balls, 13 fours) and Boucher 131 (209 balls, 17 fours) to match the centuries that Reeza Hendricks and Rilee Rossouw had made on the first two days for the Knights.
Johann Louw then produced some valuable runs at the bottom of the order to enable the Cobras to finish the day with an overall lead of 170 runs. By the close of play he was only four runs short of his second career century (131 balls, 12 fours and 3 sixes) and had shared an unbroken stand of 115 for the ninth wicket with Johan Bothma (23 off 108 balls, 2 fours).
The partnership had come in less than 30 overs at a rate of almost four to the over.
This gives them enough of an advantage to have a reasonable chance to clinch an outright victory during Sunday’s final day. Such a result would put them in a very strong position to retain their title going into the final round of fixtures as the game between the Nashua Titans and the Chevrolet Warriors was finally abandoned on day three without a ball having been bowled.
The Titans and the Warriors got five points each for that result while the Cobras have so far taken 7.08 points out of their match against the Knights.
This puts the Cobras just under a point ahead of the Titans but an outright victory would put them in a commanding position.
The Cobras play their last match against the Lions at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium while the Titans have a home fixture against the Dolphins at SuperSport Park.
With Amla and Cody Chetty both making 93 and every other batsman getting into double figures the Dolphins closed the day on 477/6 for an overall lead of 59 against the Lions.
It is difficult to see this match going beyond a draw although the Dolphins could make a bit of history as none of their batsmen has recorded a century and there are only three totals in the history of South African first-class cricket of more than 500 that do not include at least one individual century. |
